Bethells/Te Henga Beach
Bethells Beach is a popular West Coast surfing, swimming and fishing spot with good facilities including a surf club. Given its exposed and turbulent nature swimmers are advised to stick to patrolled areas. The beach is accessed via a 300 meter walk along the edge of a lagoon from the carpark and surf club building. A large recreational reserve is currently under development at the rear of the beach.

Patrolled Beach

Patrol Hours
Bethells Beach is patrolled on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 11:00am to 4:00pm between 24 October 2020 and 29 November 2020. These hours are extended to 11:00am to 5:00pm between 5 December 2020 and 28 February 2021. Hours return to 11:00am to 4:00pm from 6 March 2021 to 5 April 2021.
A Regional Lifeguard Service is provided Monday to Friday from 10 December 2019 to 23 January 2020 between 11:00am and 7:00pm.

Location
Bethells Beach/ Te Henga is located approximately 35 kilometres north west of Auckland, on the West Coast. It is an open ocean beach with headlands at either end and is punctuated by Ihumoana Island. Bethells Beach is a popular surfing, swimming and fishing spot with a modest resident population. It has good facilities including the Bethells Beach Surf Life Saving Club and plenty of carparking.

Many councils provide the results of their weekly monitoring. This lets people know what the most recent bacteria levels were. Remember, even sites with low risk can be unsuitable to swim at from time to time and we recommend that you avoid swimming for 48 hours after heavy rainfall.
