Otaki Beach

Otaki Beach is located two kilometres west of Otaki’s shopping centre and four kilometres from state Highway 1. Otaki Surf Life Saving Club is located centrally on the beach and the club provides both volunteer and professional Lifeguards during the summer months. The beach will only get large, dangerous waves during periods of bad weather and this is enough to keep people off the beach. The beach slopes gently into the ocean but holes and rips are common. Beach users should always be cautious and listen to instructions of the Lifeguards.

Family friendly

A good beach for families with some facilities and is patrolled by Surf Lifeguards over summer months. It does have the potential to be dangerous in poor conditions so ensure your family is well prepared.

Otaki Beach provides both volunteer Lifeguards during the weekends as well as professional Lifeguards during the school holiday period making swimming much safer. The beach is seldomly flat, although this does occur more often during the summer. The beach slopes gradually into the ocean but small rips and holes are common and swimmers need to be careful.

Although surfing at Otaki Beach is not great, it seems to have better surf than most of the nearby west coast beaches, so it is quite popular. The wave is only a beach break but it can sometimes have quite good waves.

Otaki's main beach area can be surf casted from however fishing in this area of the beach is not productive. A few kilometres to the south is the Otaki Rivermouth. Fishing around the mouth is popular and can be very good.

Beach Water Quality

Many councils provide the results of their weekly monitoring. This lets people know what the most recent bacteria levels were. Remember, even sites with low risk can be unsuitable to swim at from time to time and we recommend that you avoid swimming for 48 hours after heavy rainfall.
